For many small businesses with limited time and resources, Facebook is the focus of their social media efforts. In some cases it’s their only focus. With more U.S. web users on Facebook than other social sites (read: Twitter), there is logic to this strategy. However, recent research from eMarketer indicates that Facebook may not be the most successful social media tool in a business’ arsenal. In surveying a number of Fortune 500 companies (who admittedly have greater resources and budgets than a small business) over a 2 year period, it was discovered that bulletin boards/forums, blogging and online video had a higher success rate than Facebook in 2010.
While this may fly in the face of conventional wisdom, it’s telling that these businesses are better results from content creation that can be shared across channels – including Facebook.
What does this mean for you? If your social media strategy has been limited to only Facebook, perhaps it’s time to consider expanding, be it a blog, creating online video, or developing a mobile strategy.
Because it’s never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket.
